During the week starting 24th August 2009, our Senior and Under 19 teams played two friendly matches against Qormi and Msida.
In the first match on Tuesday our youth team took on Qormi. Naxxar started off on a quite note leaving the initiative to their opponents. Qormi took advantage of their initial superiority and forged ahead after only ten minutes. Naxxar reacted to this setback and Adrian Fenech managed to equalise five minutes before the half-time whistle. Our lads continued to dictate play in the second half and scored the winning goal through Kurt Drago who headed in the opponent´;s net direct from a corner.
On Friday it was the senior team´s turn who took on Msida SJ at the St Aloysius football pitch in B´Kara. Naxxar seemed a transformed side from their last outing against Siggiewi. They were organised at the back and in midfield allowing Msida practically nothing. Upfront a handful of chances were effectively created with quick and intelligent passing that sliced the Msida rearguard. The game ended 1-0 in favour of our team with a goal in the last 5 minutes. Once again Kurt Drago scored from another well taken short corner set play rehearsed during Thursday´s training session.
These two games augur well for the future. The boys are slowly but surely learning their lessons and growing in confidence. Apart from the positive results, the biggest satisfaction came from the lads´ performance in keeping shape when not in possession and their pattern of play in moving the ball forward when in possession.
